    Winter Fireflies

Winter is knocking on my door. My prediction of the first snow of the year was only off by two days. I really don't like winter, but it's much nicer to spend it in this area than where I used to live, in New England. On the plus side, it gives me an excuse to wear my Jayne hat.

Speaking of Firefly, there's been a huge growth in fans lately, which of course, translates to more websites and cool Firefly and Serenity things that can be found online. Oh, and Serenity also WON A HUGO AWARD on Saturday, August 26 at LA Con IV, the 64th World Science Fiction Convention. Here's the video of Morena Baccarin accepting the award, reading Joss Whedon's acceptance speech (PG -13 if you are worried about swear words).

Well, I had intended to embed THAT video into this post, but since that feature was disabled by the owner of the clip, I'm going to have to give you this one instead. Also because Nathan Fillion just asked me to 'please put this on the internet'. It's Joss Whedon and about half the Serenity cast at a stop on the Wizard World tour.

WOW- is this ever cool! Create your own Serenity ship from paper! The instructions are in Portuguese (I think), but the diagrams are good enough to figure out what you should be doing with all those pieces. You'll need a color printer, sharp scissors, glue and lots and lots of free time.

If you happen to be a
PodCast junkie, you'll love The Signal and FireFlyTalk, two podcasts devoted to news of the 'verse. On both sites, you can click to listen now or dowload them for later.

If you'd rather listen to music,
try some Filk. Oh, you thought that particular brand of songwriting was native only to the SCA? The Bedlam Bards, normally known for their Renaissance Fair performances are Browncoats!! They've written a filk of "Hero of Canton" and called it "The Creator of Firefly - the man they call Joss!" clicking this link opens an mp3 postcard, where you can get a FREE download of the song!

    And
FireFly Filk is a site with lyrics to many, many more great songs, but you'll have to do your own singin'.

I haven't figured out how to do a link into Second Life yet, but there's a a bunch of new Firefly/Serenity things going on in that virtual universe as well. Why, just the other day, I was able to walk through TWO different full size Serenity ships. You can now buy avatars that look like any of the cast, and there's a group of people trying to create a whole 'verse themed SIM.

All I can say is, you KNOW you've achieved cult status when people create a cookbook based on your story. Big Damn Chefs is about to publish
The International Browncoat Charity Cookbook. Their collection of recipes submitted by fans from all over the world is huge. MMMM.... Livin' Legend Eggs, Special Hell Chili, Fruity Oaty Bars.... I'm gettin' hungry...

    Firefly/Serenity Fan Films

I put my Jayne hat on the other day just because I missed the show so much. Clearly, I was craving something new to fill the Firefly/Serenity void.

    Hmm...n
ot much news lately, since Sci-Fi picked up the show...but wait, there's always Fan Films!

Done The Impossible - A Fan's tale of Firefly and Serenity looks promising. They've even prominently displayed 'the Jayne Hat' in their packaging! You can buy the DVD from their site or download it free and legally HERE.

Since posting a couple of my own films on YouTube.com, I've become aware of several THOUSAND other good films there. But, s
ince I can't post multiple videos at once, you'll just have to click the links to watch these films.

Tour Serenity 1 - a handheld camera is walked through the set. Pretty cool, but no sound. Tour Serenity 2 has lots of lights and controls on the bridge!

Lego Serenity Trailer - LEGOS! Enough said.

    Serenity Graphic Novel and BrownQuote!!

It's been a while since I've posted anything of worth about Firefly or Serenity. Not that my interest is waning, mind you... I just got so much gorram work to do!

I have spread the Firefly sickness to my boss, though, and he just told me that he's hooked after watching "Out Of Gas." Good episode...

Anyway, I finally managed to find a copy of the Serenity graphic novel. The story takes place between the end of the series and the movie, and sets up the Operative's story quite nicely. There's a bit of a surprise (as in 'I thought he was DEAD') with a heavy helping of revenge.

You can't borrow my copy. Get your own here:

Also in the Serenity 'verse is a great new service called BrownQuote. It was originally crafted just for Google home pages, but I asked nicely, and you can see it over on the left side of this page, above the Google ads. Different funny quotes from the series and movie will appear, and change daily, so get your Firefly fix right here!

And because it has been specifically requested...I shall once again post the Fruity Oaty Bar video. Shiny!!

Firefly News: MPORG, Capissen 38 Car and Flanvention cancelled!

A couple of weeks ago I checked out EVE Online, which was far, far too complex for me to get into, but the graphics were amazing! I've been interested in space-themed MPORGs since seeing Firefly. I surmised that the "Eve" universe could be easily adapted to include Firefly and Serenity ships, characters and quests, if the user interface were simplified a bit. What the world needs is a virtual 'verse!

Lo and Behold! Mere days after I mentioned this fact to my partner, I see that the internet is abuzz with the very same notion! Now all we need to do is wait until 2008. Sigh. I wonder if Reavers will be a playable class.

Fans can do AMAZING things for the shows they love. Take Phil Teller, for instance, who has built a flamethrowing car called the Capissen 38. The slideshow has photos of almost every angle of the car, and detailed descriptions. It appears to be some oooold 70's model, but I can't tell with all the extra space junk on it. Is that thing even street legal?

In other Firefly news, the Big Damned Flanvention 2 that was scheduled to happen Dec 8 - 10th was mysteriously cancelled at the last minute by the coordinators, Booster Events. Wired has the scoop from day 1, CNET news has more information from day 2, and by day three, the Backup Bash was rolling sweetly along! I am amazed at the tenacity of the California Browncoats for saving the weekend for all those fans! Still, there are several hundred fans crying for Booster Events' blood, demanding full refunds and making very bad press for them.

I don't personally know anyone who went (as there were only 500 tickets sold) but here's a Flickr gallery from The One True B!x with photos from the 'event'. Some very sexy sideburns there, Wash!

STILL don't have the Serenity movie or the Firefly series in your DVD collection? What are you waiting for? They make great holiday gifts, too!

    Shindigs abound!

In these uncertain times, it's good to have things to celebrate. In the past month I've gone to a Browncoat shindig, a fun family reunion, an SCA camping event (Crossroads) and finally, finally seen Duran Duran live in concert (that was a 20+ year wait!)

You're probably wondering what Browncoats? Wasn't Firefly and Serenity like, years ago now? Turns out there's a group of dedicated souls called the MileHigh Browncoats in *Colorado that have kept the Firefly party going, having monthly shindigs and raising money for charity. And always, for the last few years, every single shindig has conflicted with other important events on my calender. Until last Friday.

Check out this video of special musical guest Bedlam Bards performing "Can't Take the Sky" at the shindig on June 6th:

You can hear the appreciative audience woo-hooing and singing along. As the night wore on, and music of the 'verse filled the night air. In infectious happiness made me feel all shiny, and long for the days (three years ago!) when I used to blog about Firefly occasionally...

Like what you've heard? Visit Bedlam Bards on Myspace, or get On the Drift - Music inspired by Firefly and Serenity

*Browncoats are not specific only to Colorado. There are Browncoat chapters all across the country - there's even a Browncoat Wiki now!

You can't take the 'verse from me

    A battle is brewing.

First, Universal Studios encourages the fans of Firefly ("Browncoats") to viral market for the movie Serenity. But how do they thank the loyal fans for all of the money they've just saved on advertising? They are asking for retroactive licensing fees and sending Cease & Desist orders for the very fan-based products that helped both the movie and TV show succeed.

    The Browncoats' answer?

Here's OUR invoice, you gorram ingrates.

From Slashdot.com - Firefly Fans Fight Back Against Universal.

From SerenityStuff.com - An Open Letter to Browncoats
From SerenityStuff.com - An Open Letter to Universal

How did a few fans respond to the ban? By poking fun at Universal, of course! What better way to say " I helped promote Serenity and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt" than this, or this! There is already a filk song about it, which I found on the FireFilk Yahoo Group called the "Ballad of Universal", by a writer named NE Star. And it goes a little something like this...

    Take my shirts,
    Take my hats,
Say I have to pay for that.
    I don’t care, I’m still free
    to try and find Serenity.
    Take the website
    and the swag.
    There’s no doubt, it’s not a gag.
    I don’t care, I’ll still be
    watchin’ the crew of Serenity.
There’s no stuff for you and me
    since we got that C&D*.
But you can’t take my heart from me.

    (*cease and desist order)

SerenityStuff.com thinks The Storm has Passed. The little cynical part of me wonders if this whole thing could be just a another stab to see what life is left in this 'market'. Don't believe me? Read the marketing case study on Aff!nitive.com.

If you have somehow managed to stay interested in this topic (then you are either a BrownCoat, or are extremely bored) check out the copious amounts of comments on this subject at Whedonesque.com.

    Firefly Season 2??

I'm sure you all know of my great love for Firefly and Serenity.

Well, Firefly was cancelled, and the fans banded together and helped push Serenity into existence. Wouldn't it be great if we could do that AGAIN?

Firefly Season 2 is a website gathering information to do just that. I ask that you go there, now, and fill out the survey. We can't win if we don't play!

And if for SOME reason you haven't gotten the DVD's yet, here's links to Amazon:

    Crossed anachronisms

Earlier this evening I went to Unser Hafen Baronial Yule, a small and cozy event that the Queen herself attended. The food was great, court was punctuated by fabulous musical interludes and a Darbukan Dame getting Stagged.

Then, I received a present that I had asked for. Deadwood season one and two. I was instantly stretched between the medieval and the old west. I wanted to leave and go home and watch them immediately. But I wanted to stay and dance, eat and see great friends. I chose to stay and watch them tomorrow. But it was a close struggle.

The event wound down, and we adjourned to a local residence for the obligatory post revel. But I had planned ahead and brought a swimsuit for the hot tub. Ahhh, modern technology. As we were socializing and the tub was getting ready, a bunch of us ended up discussing Firefly and Serenity gossip and opinions.

One was that Shepherd Book's story was told in Serenity: He used to be an assassin as well. Ok, I can go with that. Another was that Alan Tudyk asked to be killed off in Serenity because he has cancer in real life? I was concerned enough about this one to look it up online, but I can find no evidence to support this one.

Another rumor is that a local SCA'er has apparently found documentation for the Jayne Hat, which would mean it is period and I can wear mine at events. How's that for crossover? Now I completely feel like I'm living in the wrong time.

As I basked in the 103 degree water, I saw a shooting star, and wondered if 500 years from now, someone will be reenacting us...and will it take place aboard ships like Serenity?

Serenity in Legos/Vote for the outfit I should wear to Serenity!

I loved legos as a kid. I didn't get too many of my own, but some of my friends had plenty. Enough to make all kinds of crazy spaceships. Nowadays, you can make anything out of Legos.

Take Serenity, for example. My GOD. This is SO COOL. I want one. He's even made the crew! AND THE SHIP LIGHTS UP.

And I thought I had way too much free time.

Oh, if you have no idea what Serenity is, you need to go and watch Firefly. Then you will be prepared for the movie.

Speaking of the movie, I haven't decided what to wear to the premier yet. Should I dress as a Browncoat or a Companion? Maybe I should just wear a Blue Sun shirt, and go as "Mercenary Jayne."

Help me out here, I'm having trouble deciding. Should I show my support for the Independents by going "Browncoat", knock 'em dead in a sexy "Companion" number or make everyone sweat with my "Mercenary" ensemble?

Email me with your votes and I'll tally them and dress accordingly. For your viewing pleasure, I shall post photos of me at the show!

I have a feeling I know how this will turn out...

A message from Joss Whedon to all Firefly/Serenity fans

Thought I'd repost this missive from the Lord of Sci-Fi. Check out Joss' blog if you simply must read more...

Well boys and girls and boys dressed as girls and girls dressed as Kaylee, the time is almost upon us. This Friday we take that old rust-bucket out of the shipyard and see if she can breach atmo.

It's been a long (to paraphrase a band I like) strange trip, and it'll be nice finally to show everybody what it is we've been tinkering with all this time. You already know you have my thanks, from the hardcore fans to the softcore... fans.... let me try that again. From the people manning the booths, buying DVD sets for their friends, getting banners seen everywhere on Australian TV, raffling artwork for ticketholders (Adam Hughes, take a bow), to the most casual fan who just wants to see the flick and won't ever even read this.

You guys are the fuel in the engine, the Fire in the Fly, the weird green stuff coming out of Serenity's butt. (Hmmm. Forget that last one. I'm a little bit out of control here.) Everyone needs something to keep them going. Mal has his ship. Zoe has her integrity. Jayne has Vera. And I've got you guys.

So what now? There have been so many posts about seeing it, seeing it again, the first weekend, the second weekend, being enthusiastic without being obnoxious (and yes, it IS hard to see over the pom-pom of a Jayne hat), buying tickets in advance, making a noise... I honestly wouldn't know what to add. I can tell you this: the movie will play in about 2200 hundred theaters, which is a good number. Too many, and you get empty theaters with no energy -- not enough, and you get, well, not enough. It may be hard to find in some areas but it'll be out there. Leave no multiplex unturned!

This is going to be a ground war, peeps -- we have to hold the valley for a long while. However it opens, it needs to HOLD. Instead of the Alliance we'll be fighting viewer apathy, fear of something new, the urge to wait for DVD, and Jessica Alba in a bikini. (Although I have it on good authority that she spends 90% of the film in a huge wooly parka. Make sure that gets out.)

The day this puppy opens, I'll be seeing it with my family (don't worry, there's a lot of them, and they're all paying) and then I'm off to Europe to learn the word 'Browncoats' in nine different languages -- 'cause like I said, it's all about holding. I'll never be far from a computer, though, so I can check in with y'all. Thanks for every damn thing.

And remember, amidst all the urgency to make this an event, all the work and the worry, to take two hours and just enjoy yourself. That is, after all, what all this fighting's about.

    -joss.

    Serenity RPG!!

Here's a link to RPG.net's forum where people are discussing the upcoming role playing game based on Serenity!

So if I haven't told you anything about Serenity yet, I'm sorry. I'm still re-watching the Firefly DVD that the BF and I got for Christmas. (Thanks B & C - you still need to come over and watch some episodes...)

Anyway, if you haven't seen Firefly yet, I strongly suggest you either:

    A. Borrow the DVD set from a friend
    B. Go buy it - if you like sci-fi and/or westerns, you'll love it.

Once you get a copy, check out the easter egg. (Which only makes sense if you watch the episode titled Jaynestown.

Get yourself ready for the September release!! More news as it becomes available!

Firefly is coming to the SCI-FI Channel!!

FOX, you could've had a great show on your hands, but nooooooooo, you had to cancel "Firefly" after only ONE Season! Jesus, didn't "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" teach you anything about Joss Whedon?

Well, guess what? The SCI-FI Channel knows what we need, and it's giving it to us!

FIREFLY (FOX) - The Sci Fi Channel has landed the repeat rights to all 15 hours of the short-lived FOX series (and basis of the upcoming "Serenity" feature film). The network's July schedule lists the series as joining its Friday lineup on July 22 at 7:00/6:00c where it will precede original episodes of "Stargate SG-1," "Stargate Atlantis" and "Battlestar Galactica."

Can't wait? Get the whole thing here..

    Serenity Review

My night started with a visit to a friend's end-of summer barbecue in Loveland, where I showed up in my Jayne costume. I was basically doing the token fly-through, small talk and glass of wine before driving the hour to Louisville for the Serenity midnight premiere.

Upon my arrival at 8:30, I find I am one of the first to arrive. What, three and a half hours early and NO one else is there yet? Amateurs!!

Anyway, I decide to nap in my van until a few friends arrive. I got about 20 minutes of sleep before my phone started ringing, and my friends Russ, Jen and Matt were nearly there. We ended up at the Outback across the street, needing some drink and vittles before the show. Apparently, Carraba's had to deal with over 50 Firefly Fans. I think it was just the few of us at Outback, but the staff was pretty wary of us, as we were wearing our Jayne hats and taking photos.

We traveled back across the street to the theater, to find a few people had shown up. As we came up the steps, there were two men standing at the inside counter wearing suits. And they had blue hands!! The costume factor was increasing...

Car by car, fans trickled in for the next half an hour. Then it was like the gates of Hell opened and the crowd seemed to double, triple and quadruple in size!! Some of my friends were still on their way, so I spent most of my time outside (also because the lobby was as hot as the backside of a Firefly's engine room) with other folks who were pretty much tailgating until the theater was ready.

One awesome thing I should tell about that happened was that Talan managed to walk all the way from the car, into the theater, sit for the whole movie and walk all the way back out to the car. Without crutches. He'll be fencing before we know it.

    But I digress...

The exodus inside began, and still I'm waiting for a friend, to give him his pass. Fortunately, he arrived just in time. If Russ hadn't saved a seat for me, I would've had a pretty poor spot - the theater was nearly full!

The noise level was high - we were all clearly very excited. People were quoting lines from the TV show, throwing popcorn and basically acting like kids at Christmas. I looked around the room, to see where my other friends ended up, and I counted at least 4 other Jayne hats besides ours.

Then, Carrick and Max (the two guys who put all this together for us) took the head of the room and made some announcements. Carrick read the letter that Joss Whedon wrote for the fans. We cheered a birthday, the woman who first got most of us hooked on the series, and the two men themselves for organizing this private premiere.

Then, the screen flickered...And we CHEERED!! Oh, wait. It's just the previews.

Finally, the Universal Logo appeared on the screen, and we were about to take a ride on Serenity. And she was falling apart, so it was pretty bumpy.

The crew was bickering (as usual) and dropping one-liners like a rain of spent shells. If anything, the situation was more intense, with the Alliance now SERIOUSLY after River, and Mal under a lot of pressure from the crew. The Reavers finally get to make their appearance, and you even get to learn the true origins of them. Great plot twist there.

The assassin that the Alliance sends after River (and subsequently Mal and anyone who has ever sheltered the crew) is completely brutal. Mr. Universe is a great new character, who taps into the media of the universe and pretty much lives off the signal. The backgrounds are lush, the big space battles (and the fight scenes!) are intense and the whole two hours went by way too fast.

Some of the romantic directions that the TV show looked to be taking are resolved, but then, this movie does some twists and turns that I never expected, either. The cast hasn't lost a drop of their chemistry. Their love for this story clear. Lucas, you got some competition.

Now, you would think that that would be the end of my review, but you'd be wrong. You see, I had to drive all the way home to Loveland after this let out around 2:30. That, and being jazzed from the vat of Dr. Pepper I drank, I didn't get to sleep until after 4am.

I dragged my sleepy self into work around 10. The first thing I did was pound another Dr. Pepper and eat a burrito with the hottest sauce I could find. I HAD to wake up. It wouldn't do to be making a bunch of mistakes on billboards. A typo that is 20 feet tall makes you look really stupid.

Somehow I managed not to break anything, or miss anything important. However, upon leaving at 4, I noticed that strange queasy feeling you get when you are really too sleepy to drive. Going north on Main Street through Longmont, I drove past a restaurant that I see everyday. They've always got some special plate or deal advertised on their sign with those black plastic letters that slide onto the tracks.

This time I could SWEAR it read "Create a Mexican Sauron."

Wow. I am way more tired than I think. Dyslexia usually doesn't set until I've gone a full 24 hours without sleep.

I spent the whole drive home talking to my friend Mazzy in Pennsylvania because I needed someone to keep me awake, but mostly to giggle about Sauron in a sombrero.

God I need a nap. I fear I'll have some crazy dreams....

Firefly Podcast and Serenity easter Egg

While I was checking out the links page for my previous post about the RenFair Music awards, I noticed one of their favorite podcasts is The Signal - Firefly Podcast.

Now I haven't gotten myself quite up to speed yet with all this new technology that seems to arrive whenever I have no money at all, but I keep hearing that Podcasts are pretty cool.

I suppose I don't REALLY need an I-Pod to listen, but being one of the two people on this rock that didn't get an I-Pod for Christmas makes me feel a bit jealous. I guess I'll have to make do with simply donwloading them all to my hard drive.

I did get Serenity on DVD as a Christmas present though (Thanks, Todd!) and managed to find the easter egg - The Fruity Oaty Bar commercial, and a bit of explanation about it by Joss Whedon.

To find the easter egg, load the DVD, and wait for the menu to appear in engllish. There will be two arcs on the right and left sides of the screen, which both have circles in the centers. From "Play", hit your left arrow button on your remote and the circle on the right arc should light up.

And after you've gotten that song stuck in your head like the rest of us, show your support by wearing some Fruity Oaty Bar schwag!

    Virtual Easter Egg Hunt!

It's that time of year again, to bust out our sleuthing gear and search for the latest crop of virtual Easter Eggs. But I'm not talking about the colored, dyed, painted made-by-a-hen variety. The Easter eggs I'm interested in now are the hidden goodies in games, websites and movies! One of the largest websites devoted to this craft is Eeggs.com, who have a huge archive and a very informative FAQ page. You could spend days there, finding out what treasures your favorite movies and games hold for you.

Some of my favorite DVD easter eggs are the ones hidden in all of the Tolkien Ring movies. These clips are vulgar entertainment at its best, created simply to drive sales up. But now, with the magic of the internet, one only has to search YouTube for copies of the eggs that some other enterprising geek has found.

These easter eggs are not suitable for children, and should you wish to view the Dom/Elijah interview, Gollum at the MTV awards, the Peter Jackson interview by Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn, or the Jack Black/Michelle Gellar MTV promo, I will not be held responsible for any ill effects upon your brain. Especially the Jack Black one. Not safe for work! You have been warned.

But I also love the Firefly stuff like Adam Baldwin singing "The Hero of Canton" or the "Fruity Oaty Bar" commercial from Serenity! And these are clean, safe and child-friendly.

Maybe you are a Star Wars fan. Yoda hiphop is pretty cool, and the only one I could find a video clip for online. Eeggs.com lists several Star Wars finds, but I cannot vouch for their content or entertainment value.

Lately, I've been stumbling across some NPC's in World of Warcraft whose names I thought must have some 'special meaning'. Turns out there are hundreds and hundreds of pop culture references in the game, most of which you can find on this fine list of EasterEggs by Blizzplanet. They've also got a page of Burning Crusade eggs, but since I don't have that expansion yet, I cannot claim any firsthand experience with this new area.

And now for something completely different: Monty Python has easter egged some of their material as well. Here's a funny skit about a glassblowing factory that is hidden in the BBC compilation of Flying Circus episodes:

Hooray Easter eggs! I'm going to go out to the store and see if all the chocolate bunnies aren't gone yet. Mmmmm......bunnies.

    Happy RezDay to Me!

Today is my third 'rez-day'. Three years ago today I signed into Second Life for the very first time. Three is OLD, considering most of the growth there has been in the last year or so.

This was pointed out to me earlier this evening, while I was 'virtually' hanging out in Washburne, an area created by Firefly and Serenity fans.

    I had stumbled across their
weekly virtual Browncoat Shindig and found myself relaxing next to a campfire. I made sure to wear my "No Space Monkeys Allowed" shirt and busted out a bottle of Blue Sun liquor. I thought it strange, that in my real life, the dancers would be nearest the fire, and for once, I had it pretty much to myself the whole time.

While many others were dancing and having themselves a great time, one of the revelers mentioned it was my rezday, and sure enough, it was. I was floored with the "coincidentalness" of it all.

I mean, what are the odds I'd inadvertently be celebrating my virtual birthday with total strangers who are Browncoats??

I think I just gained +3 to my geek skill.

    Great interview with Joss Whedon

More here for the Firefly Fans! Check out this very long, very detailed interview with Joss Whedon.

It definitely has some Serenity spoilers, so don't read it if you haven't seen the movie.

    I don't think I can sleep!!

I'm so excited! In a mere 26 hours, I'll be comfortably seated in the Louisville Colony 12 Theater, watching the midnight premiere of Serenity. I've got a posse of friends showing up, two of which are joining me in the "Cunning Hat Club", and we're all going to get geek-a-licious! Want your VERY OWN Jayne hat? Well, Paxknits can make you one. But not by tomorrow.

Anyway, help support this movie! Everyone reading this should go see it too. Read Radhole's Firefly review to get you in the mood.

Many, many friends are also making the journey from near and far to attend this private screening. I suspect I won't be the only one dressed up. I will be posting photos as soon as I get this darn memory card reader figured out. Gorram technology.

For your enjoyment, and because I just know that this will be neccessary for tomorrow night, here's some lyrics from "Jaynestown". So when do we get to go to the crappy town where I'm a hero?

    Jayne...

    The man they call Jayne...

He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne

Now Jayne saw the Mudders' backs breaking

    He saw the Mudders lament
And he saw the magistrate taking
Every dollar and leaving five cents

So he said, "You can't do that to my people"
He said "You can't crush 'em under your heel"
    Jayne strapped on his hat
    And in five seconds flat
Stole everything Boss Higgins had to steal

He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne

Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
    The man they call Jayne
    He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit the sky

He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
    And the man call Jayne
    He turned 'round his plane
And headed out for the stars

He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!

    Desperately Seeking Cunning Hat...

So I'm going to a Serenity premiere that a friend has arranged with a local theater. I'm sure we'll camp out hours before the show starts at midnight, just to entertain ourselves with witty lines from Firefly. Yeah, I'm a geek. So sue me.

Since the votes for what costume I should wear are leaning towards "mercenary" I've decided that I need a cunning hat like Jayne Cobb.

I've found a local knitter who will hopefully be able to get me this awesome fashion statement in time. My Blue Sun shirt is on the way, and I've even visited the dollar store for a fine plastic machine gun. Yes, I will name her VERA. But I will not try and trade her for some prairie harpy.

I don't think I'll be shaving my head for effect, though. Or growing a goatee. But I will learn some Mandarin Chinese...
