    Virtual Viking experience

I just LOVE it when modern technology and history combine. Especially in virtual interactive museum exhibits. *CAVI, the creators of this amazing experience, has more information about the 1000 year old runestone exhibit in Denmark. Watch and be amazed:

It occurs to me that I'd really like an interactive stone like this when I die. Maybe 1000 years from now, my epic tale will be told in a virtual museum exhibit as well. One can dream....

*The Center for Advanced Visualization and Interaction. By Thor, how on Midgard can I get a job THERE??!! Oh, yeah, guess I'd have to live in Denmark...and learn Dutch.

    Outlander

Per Omina Saecula sure has the math right on this one:

    Beowulf + Predator = *Outlander

I agree. It's gonna upset the history purists as well. A few years from now, we'll have students in medieval literature classes all over the country claiming Grendel was really an alien because they saw this movie.

I will of course sharpen my special mocking quill for this one. I'm sure I can find a few vikings to invade the movie theater with...

*The movie title also kind of upsets me. I'm an "Outlander", meaning I live in the Kingdom of the Outlands in the SCA. Did they ASK our persmission before using it? Noooo...well, that's vikings for you. I think we've been pillaged.

    Faintheart

I have a feeling I'm going to strongly identify with this movie.

From FAINTHEART ON MYSPACE: "Faintheart is a hilarious and heartwarming British romantic comedy set in the world of Viking battle re-enactments"

Yep, that's definitely British humor. Looks like it'll be released in the UK February 2009. Maybe us Americans will get it this spring too?

Can you imagine a whole kitchen set based on the Norse Gods? I'm thinking Thor gets the blender, and Odin the fridge.

Ye Old Times - movie pre-review!

Forsooth and Huzzah! Some of you may know of my 'fanboy' attitude towards Jack Black. I really do think he's John Belushi's comedic heir. He satisfies my thirst for silly, yet vulgar comedy. I'm pretty sure he's part muppet, too. Which makes him a literal 'jester' in my book.

He has come one step closer to my dream ( Jack Black joins the SCA ) with the upcoming movie, "Ye Old Times". I don't know when this movie about "two rival fairs vying for ownership of all things Middle Ages" will be shown in theaters, but I'm hoping that he'll do some character marketing.

Both Cinematical and the British Empire magazine have pondered the humorous possibilities of this new movie. But it's not JUST Jack Black. Looking at the rest of the cast finds even more treasure!

Tim Robbins, Will Arnett, Cary Elwes and a cameo by John C. Reilly....oh, man. I can't help but speculate. Cary Elwes. That's Wesley from The Princess Bride. I can sooo see him in the role of the old creepy elf dude in the velvet cape who still thinks he's the hottie of the RenFair.

And Tim Robbins either should be King of the Faire or a sensitive viking. Yes. God. Please. The pool of inside jokes and one liners from those two actors alone could carry the whole movie.

This is pure speculation. I have no idea what roles anyone has, save Jack himself as Professor Shockworthy -- the movie's narrator who tutors some "romantically entwined characters in the mysterious ways of love."

I welcome Ye Old Times! I shall bring my band of merry men and descend upon my local theater with mirth and magic! And maybe elf ears...

    Anachronistic modern gadgets!

I'm always on the lookout for modern gadgets with an anachronistic twist. Not that I can afford most of them, but one can dream...

Leave it to the Dutch to make a hot tub that looks like something from Fisher-Price. I'm not a big fan of orange, especially in my bathroom, but this wood-burning hot tub certainly looks as if it could have evolved from a medieval invention. I'm sure that alchemists of the past knew how to do this at least on a smaller scale.

We all know that 'hot' rises and 'cold' sinks. This tub creates its own convection current: as the cold water is pulled into the base of the coil, it is heated up by the adjustable fire basket inside the coil. The heated water is pushed out into the tub through the top coil and the process repeats itself until you've got nice toasty water. Huzzah, hot tub!

Three guesses as to what this is. It sure looks like a piece of shoulder armor or maybe even a helmet. Would you believe it's a breadbox? Yes, indeed, it is the Armadillo Breadbin! It kind of reminds me of a lorica segmentata. Those segments collapse in on itself when you lift the 'tail' of the armadillo. Protect your bread from marauding invaders! Patented anti-arrow technology! No guarantee against bread mold however.

Achieve Norse God-like powers with the Genso Kukan Aurora Borealis projector! What viking wouldn't love an Instant Bifrost projector for casting a realistic rainbow bridge effect upon the walls of his tent? The pick-up lines are just so obvious it hurts. "Hey, baby, I can show you the way to Valhalla?"

But then I looked at the product page photos. Ewwww. This could be done so much better. I good idea, really, but a very unimpressive outcome. But what do the Japanese know about the northern lights anyway? They're not anywhere near the arctic circle. They've probably only seen it in bad Anime cartoons from 1985. That would explain the lameness of this product.

Now here's something useful! Not only does this modern-looking watch tell the time, but it also doubles as a catapult. Yep, that little spoon on the watch face can launch small ammunition (like peas, dried lentils, corn kernels) up to 8 feet. Perfect for personal warfare! Of course a watch of this type pretty much guarantees you'll never be on time. You'll be too busy launching attacks on the cubicle next to yours to notice that you are late for the sales meeting.

Check out the Backyard Artillery site for animated photos of the amazing watch catapult in action!

Ok, I know this isn't really a 'gadget', but it is still pretty darn cool. This replica of the Claremont Helmet can be used as a trash bin or even an ice bucket! I wonder how many bottled ales it could hold? It has a mesh basket inside for easy removal of trash or stored items.

What a wonderful centerpiece this would make at a feast, filled with cookies or treats. Or, plant it next to your chair at the feast, and ditch the food you don't like, thus avoiding the ire of the head cook. Imagine never having to hear "Don't you like my flan?" ever again. Ah, yes, a truly useful gadget indeed. Anything to avoid the horrors of flan.

A throne fit for a King! Seriously, you know you've taken the medieval motif too far when you are actually considering buying a toilet seat that looks like a medieval helmet. Apparently there's even real chainmail in the clear lucite seat. From the description on the website, it is the last word in siege withstanding comfort! Ummm... Ok.

The Gothic Commode seat will amaze your friends and scare away your enemies! Or is it scare your friends and amaze your enemies...yeah. I hope I never see one of these in real life. I wouldn't be able to stop laughing. Though if one of these showed up in a port-a-potty at an SCA event, there would be a line to get in. Sad, but true.

The Thirsty Traveler seeks the perfect Mead

The Thirsty Traveler has the best job in the world. Basically, he gets to travel around the world and get the locals to share their alcohol with him. Watch as he visits a Viking reenactment in Great Britain, where Mead is the flowing and the battles are fierce! His opening music sounds kind of "Firefly-esque" don't you think?

You may have to view a short Orbitz ad at the beginning of this video, sorry. But it's worth it to see all the awesome mead-cooked Viking food. Mmmm....hungry...

Return to the Dark Ages on the History Channel

Yesterday, the History Channel premiered a new show called The Dark Ages. Being that I don't have cable TV, I'm going to have to wait until this shows up on BitTorrent to watch....

600 YEARS OF DEGENERATE, GODLESS, INHUMAN BEHAVIOR!

Well, with a marketing headline like that I can't wait to watch. I just love sensationalism. You can't argue with a series that uses DEATH METAL in their promotional commercials. Without cable, I guess I'll just have to watch the videos to see the 'promo spots' and 'behind the scenes' footage. Wow! Nice educational videos about the weaponry and fighting styles! Check 'em out!

The website features some neat multimedia treasures, such as the interactive timeline and the photo gallery, but the real fun comes with the 'create your own Dark Ages character' page.

I've made one that even kind of looks like me:
Check out my Dark Ages profile! Look, I'm a viking!

    Viking Longboats for sale

If I only had a spare $7,000... I'd get myself one of these cute little longboats and row around Lake Loveland.

That would probably piss off the powerboaters something fierce. Especially when we send out the boarding party for their beer.

And remember, for all you newbie vikings... pillage, THEN burn. Not the other way around.

    Mmmm...Vikings...

Yet another movie coming up that should appease us historical types. There have been only a couple of good movies in the last 20 years or so with Vikings (a sadly underrepresented category if I ever saw one) being Erik the Viking and the 13th Warrior.

Slated for release in 2006 is Beowulf and Grendel, which was filmed in Iceland, where the landscape hasn't changed since the original Anglo Saxon epic was written nearly a thousand years ago.

And, just for the ladies, the stud factor looks pretty high as well.

More resources on the Beowulf story can be found here, if you feel like learning a little Old English or checking out links to images from the original manuscript.
