Another Great SCA video from Atlantia

The Kingdom of Atlantia, Barony of Pontealto, holds the Tournament of Love and Beauty every year. This year they were visited by modern video cameras and interviewers...



Huzzah to the much higher production values than I'm used to seeing on most SCA videos! This was produced by "Push-Pause," a Verizon original production in collaboration with Michael Rosenblum's HyperLocal News Productions. Push-Pause features high-impact hyper-local news and community stories shot by trained citizen video journalists.

Swords are making a comeback!

Ye may have noticed a small banner buried way down in my sidebar for a movie called Reclaiming the Blade - if not, you need to spend some time exploring my site; there's a bunch of hidden treasures here...but I digress.

No need to go hunting for the banner now, for the movie trailer is upon us!



Hungry for more swords? Well, this amazing gem just passed through my RSS feed this morning: how about the Raymond J. Lord Collection (a huge page of PDF period fencing and fighting manuals) to whet your appetite for steel? I recommend saving all of the manuals to your harddrive to print and read at your leisure. To be truly cavalier, one must have adequate leisure time, no?

Videos from Gulf Wars

Someday, I'll get to go to Gulf Wars. It looks like tons of fun! And, looking at the map of the site, it looks like a huge event. Just check out this open field battle video and tell me you wouldn't enjoy that! Hulk smash!



Here's a short video that gives a nice clear shot of the castle. Granted, it's not quite as grand as the Pennsic castle, but it sure adds a touch of realism. If this were a real attack on a real castle, it would be the opportune moment for some boiling oil, what with that logjam of fighters in the doorway...



It's not ALL bashing each other with sticks, though. Hide your weapons at War, lest they become part of a freeform duct tape art sculpture tower! Did some Burning Man people sneak in to Calontir lately?



Ok. I am officially jealous. Maybe next year...

While searching for Estrella War videos, I came across this cute video which appears to be someone's school project. Good use of soundtrack - I felt the start of a tear in my eye when the guy was wounded. Huzzah! Lila, whoever you are, please make more videos!!

Estrella War 2007 - More photos & a battle video

Slowly but surely, hundreds of Estrella War photos are making their way onto various photo-sharing sites all across the internet. While I'm a fan of Flickr, there are other services like SmugMug where good gentles like Martin of Rivenstar have crafted fine galleries containing both battlefield images and people of the West Kingdom!

But back to Flickr for a bit: A user named i_a_caradoc has created a fine Estrella 2007 gallery of about 40 photos, one of which is the Outlands War Drums!

I know, you are really here for the video. I'm still waiting on the hours and hours of footage I just know was taken at War this year, what with the proliferation of cell phone cameras now.... Has my plea for the sharing of such digital masterpieces fallen on deaf ears? Or have all of you fighters just been hit in the head too many times to retain information? Hellooooo? Bueller? Bueller?

Ah, a lone new video hast revealed itself to me by the glory of the 'search bar'! A YouTube user named theblackaceofspades has posted his view of some spearmen in battle. From a pretty close perspective, I might add! Do step back a bit next time!

And here's fresh video from melee practice in the Barony of Caerthe, in the Outlands that pits 5 against 8. I think all of the 5 are Knights...

It's a mighty skirmish that finishes off with the classic 'everyone gang up on one guy' attack!

Also, audience participation archery mades this an exciting melee for everyone. But this is why you see no audience in the side seating. Arrows were bouncing off into the bleachers.

No fighters were injured during the making of this film!

Election Day

Wouldn't it be nice if we could determine our presidents with a trial by combat, just like SCA crown tourneys? I'm pretty sure Kerry would kick Bush's ass. Can't you just imagine them all decked out in plate (or plastic if that's your preference) banging away at each other with fat rattan longswords? I'm betting Bush would be a sword-and-board kind of guy, but Kerry might be good with a great sword or maybe even spear.

And if you don't like the regime, wait six months.
